King Mansa Musa of Timbuktu was the richest man in history. Today, Timbuktu is a city in the African country of Mali. It is said that he had so much property, which was also difficult to guess. Moses ruled the Sultanate of Mali at a time when there were gold reserves. It is said that under his rule, about 1000 kg of gold was produced in a year.
Actually, Mansa Musa’s real name was Moses Keita I, but after becoming king he was called Mansa.
Mansa means king. According to the BBC, the Sultanate of Moses was so large that its end could not be guessed. Today’s Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Chad and Nigeria were then part of the Sultanate of Moses.
Mansa Musa became the ruler of the Mali Empire in 1312 AD. During his reign of nearly 25 years, he built many mosques, many of which still exist today. Jingareber Mosque of Timbuktu is one of the same mosques built during the era of Mansa Musa.
A story related to Mansa Musa is famous worldwide. It is said that Mansa Musa set out on a trip to Mecca in 1324 AD. During this time his convoy consisted of about 60 thousand people, out of which 12 thousand were his personal followers only. Apart from this, there was a squad of 500 people ahead of the horse that Mansa Moses was riding on, and each had a gold rod in his hand.
It is said that there was also a batch of 80 camels in Mansa Musa’s convoy and each camel loaded 136 kg of gold. It is said that Mansa Musa was so generous that when he passed through the Egyptian capital, Cairo, he donated so much to the poor that there was a great rise in inflation in that area.
Europe did not have any mineral reserves or gold reserves in the era of Mansa Musa. It is said that when the talk of Mansa Musa distributing gold to the poor reached Europe, they started coming to the Mali kingdom only to see how true the spread of Mansa Musa’s wealth is.
